Volunteer with Legal Hand

Make a meaningful impact in your community by helping people resolve everyday civil legal issues—no legal experience needed.

As a Legal Hand Volunteer, you’ll be trained to provide free information, assistance, and referrals on matters like housing, family, immigration, domestic violence, and public benefits. The goal–to help people with common civil legal problems and expand access to justice.

Volunteers of the Year

  • I started volunteering to gain legal experience while making a real difference in people’s lives. Each shift has taught me something new—whether it’s learning about different legal issues or how to better support someone in a tough situation. Even with a busy schedule, I’ve stayed committed because the work feels meaningful. I’ve learned so much from Judge Fisher and the supportive staff, and I always feel encouraged valued in the work we do together.

  • I became a Legal Hand volunteer to better understand various issues affecting our underserved communities and to help them overcome those challenges. Through Legal Hand, I learned many ways to help our visitors. The visitors' persistent efforts to fight for their rights and lead better lives invigorated me. Sensing their relief and confidence, just from knowing more about their issues, was immensely rewarding.

  • Volunteering with Legal Hand gave me real-world experience across legal topics and strengthened my communication and problem-solving skills. I learned to apply my legal education while helping community members navigate complex issues. Even when we couldn’t offer solutions, being a compassionate listener made a meaningful impact. I’m grateful to have contributed to such an important service.

  • I joined Legal Hand early in college to gain experience at the intersection of law and human rights. Volunteering has helped me build practical skills, better understand systemic issues, and connect deeply with community members. The support from staff and the impact I’ve been able to make—whether through resources, referrals, or simply listening—keep me coming back. It's rewarding to know that even small actions can make a real difference.

Our volunteers come from all backgrounds.

We provide comprehensive training, including interviewing techniques, subject matter basics and what assistance non-lawyers can and cannot provide. While helping Visitors, Volunteers receive close support from Legal Hand center staff.

Help expand access to justice, one conversation at a time. Volunteers work remotely and commit to one 3-hour shift per week for six months, with flexibility on the choice of hours. Basic computer skills are required.
