If you need information about a problem walk-in or make an appointment to visit one of our Legal Hand storefronts. One of our trained, community volunteers will be there to provide assistance, information, and if referrals to other useful services.

The Legal Hand centers are established in easy to find locations, have weekend and evening hours to accommodate communities members with busy work schedules, and are equipped with computers, Internet access, and printers.

Ignacio Jaureguilorda 

Director

Ignacio Jaureguilorda is the director of Legal Hand. Before joining Legal Hand, he worked as a public interest attorney for 14 years, providing free civil legal services to low-income New Yorkers. Most recently, Ignacio served as director of legal services at the AIDS Center of Queens County, where he spearheaded the organization’s legal and public policy work and represented people with terminal and chronic illnesses. Previously, he served as an attorney with Housing Works, a non-profit organization that works on HIV/AIDS and homelessness issues, litigating cases involving income discrimination in real estate and discrimination against transgender individuals. Ignacio has represented clients in a wide range of matters, including landlord-tenant disputes, public benefits, discrimination, immigration, and family law. He is also the director of Poverty Justice Solutions at the Center for Court Innovation.

Jennie Kim 

Jamaica On-Site Attorney, Queens Legal Services

Jennie G. Kim is a Queens Legal Services attorney working on Legal Hand Jamaica along with 15 or so community volunteers.  Jennie has practiced as a legal services and civil rights attorney for close to 10 years and in many areas of law such as civil rights, consumer, housing, government benefits, family law, foreclosure, immigration, etc.  In her career, Jennie has proudly served poor and under-served peoples.
 
Before joining Queens Legal Services, Jennie worked at NYLAG in the Storm Response Unit representing victims of Superstorm Sandy on foreclosure prevention, NYC and NYS disaster relief programs, consumer issues, and flood insurance claims.  She also worked for a civil rights firm representing clients in federal and state courts in cases concerning civil rights violations, such as police misconduct, first amendment violations, and racial, gender, and national origin discrimination in employment and public access contexts. She has handled cases in consumer law (bankruptcy and debtor defense), disability law, discrimination law, divorce proceedings, family law (custody, child neglect, child support, domestic violence, and guardianship), foreclosure, government benefits, healthcare benefits, and housing law. Jennie is a graduate of City University of NY Law School. She received her B.A. from the University of Chicago.

Marlies Talay

Crown Heights Volunteer Coordinator

Marlies Talay joined the Crown Heights Community Mediation Center in September 2013, where she oversees Legal Hand Crown Heights, a direct services program for Crown Heights residents in need of legal assistance, with issues such as housing, benefits, family law, immigration, and employment, among others. Previously, she spent two years working in youth development with City Year New York, and is a former Coro Fellow in Public Affairs. Marlies graduated from Pomona College in 2010, where she studied politics and racial justice.
